There are three phases of Strategy which consist of Strategic Analysis, Planning and Implementation and the importance of it in every business. To set a clear Vision, Mission, and Values and to communicate it with the people in the organization and letting them fully understand it especially the objectives of the Management, for every person in the organization is aligned with it.
Moreover, setting clear objectives with realistic timelines, doing SWOT/PESTLE, Gap Analysis, methods on knowing the root cause of each objective in order to provide a clear strategy and action plan. There should be a Balance scorecard that consists of Objectives/Goals, Performance Measures, Target Measures, and Initiatives.
While setting collectively the business objectives and strategies, we realize that some people are Analytical thinkers and some are Creative thinkers, therefore, you should assess which in your team think analytic and creative in order for you to identify how to motivate and for them to buy in your objective.
Additionally, one of the major issues in implementing a strategic plan is motivating the people to understand and accept the plan set and to gain “buy-in”. It is important for the plan to be communicated and the reasons given for the plan, to ensure people committed to the plan’s success. In this, it will minimize the chance of failure. Because everyone in the organization will be affected by the new strategy. It will help motivate them to embrace the changes if we assure they understand and appreciate the part they have to play in making it a success.
Lastly, for a new strategy to succeed, it is essential that all people are kept as informed as possible. It is vital that everyone knows what the strategy will do for them and how their commitment will bring benefits for all. This will help them focus on their role in the plan and gain their commitment.
In order to reduce resistance to the strategic change, we must know how to sell the benefits of the change to all personnel, provide information about the plan and processes that will take place, create a shared understanding of the need to change from everyone, allow involvement of people at all levels in the analysis and planning as much as possible and maintain good, clear and open communication channels.
Finally, we should always differentiate between the normal goal and stretched goals, Gap Analysis, Methods of Strategy Planning, and Implementation. Stretch goals are different from the normal goal setting process. It refers to the natural desire of people to set themselves goals they are confident of achieving at their current level, however, stretch goals require a person to work harder and feel uncomfortable until they get the job done without being perceived as so hard that they get discouraged.
