Nearly every one of us has likely been touched by breast cancer in some way – whether personally or through the experience of a family member, friend, colleague, or someone from our community.
Among women, breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer other than skin cancer, Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women.
Despite these statistics, only about half of women aged 40 and older report having a mammogram – a screening test recommended to find breast cancer early, when it is most treatable – within the past year.
Additionally, studies have shown that physical inactivity and weight gain are associated with breast cancer risk, meaning people who are physically active and maintain a healthy weight are less likely to get breast cancer.
This is where we come in October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month We can help save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays by encouraging everyone we know to stay well by taking steps to help reduce their risk of developing breast cancer or find it early.
Regular screenings tests reduce your chance of breast cancer.
1.Know your risk
• Talk to both sides of your family to learn about your family health history
• Talk to a doctor about your risk of breast cancer
• Talk with a doctor about which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk
• Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
• Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40
3.Know what is normal for you
• See a doctor if you notice any of these breast changes:
– Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area
– Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
4.Change in the size or shape of the breast
• Dimpling or puckering of the skin
• Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the breast
• Breast discharge that starts suddenly
• New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away
5.Make a healthy lifestyle choices
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Add exercise into your routine
• Limit alcohol intake
